Princeton: 2013 – 2014 Women’s College Squash Season Preview

Princeton University Princeton, NJ — As the top seed at the 2012-2013 Women’s National Team Championships, it looked like Princeton was on track to return to the Howe Cup finals for the first time since winning the 2009 national title. But a 3-6 upset loss to Trinity in the semifinals derailed the Tigers’ plans, and they ended the season ranked fourth in the nation. Expect the 2013-2014 team to be even stronger, even with the loss perennial number 1 Julie Cerullo to graduation. Headlining the Tigers’ first-year class is Maria Elena Ubina, who helped the United States team finish second at the 2013 World Juniors and who reached the round of 16 in the individual world junior draw. She’ll be joined by highly ranked Canadian junior Alex Toth and Gabriella Garr, who was ranked in the top 10 under-19 in the U.S. After last season’s exciting trip to South Africa, this season the team can look forward to training in an upgraded bike area, with new flooring, furniture, and paint, among other improvements. The team will also continue its volunteer work, participating in Race for the Cure and working with a Newark urban group. “We have a great group of players who work well together and enjoy working hard for one another,” says Princeton head coach Gail Ramsay.
