Northampton, MA — The 2011 – 2012 college squash season is underway.
Although the official start for most teams is in November, there were a few matches last month, including the Jesters Mid America Collegiate Cup. Also in October, Haverford hosted Drexel. This was Drexel’s first match as a varsity squad. The Drexel Dragons split on the day. The women lost 3-6, while the men started the season with a 9-0 victory.
Last weekend, Kenyon hosted matches with Illinois Champaign and Illinois Springfield. The Lords beat both Illinois squads. Illinois Champaign narrowly defeated Denison 5-4. Denison captured matches at #1, #3, #4, and #5, and lost several close four-game matches in the loss. Denison defeated Illinois Springfield.
This weekend, George Washington hosted Georgetown on Friday night. Both the Colonial men and women shutout the Hoyas with 9-0 victories.
The Vassar women hosted Haverford and Smith on Saturday. The Brewers went 2-0 on the day. Smith was satisfied with their 1-1 record. Their 3-6 loss to Vassar was incredibly close. After losing her first collegiate game, first-year player Jacqueline Zhou defeated Vassar senior Meg Taylor in four games (10-12, 11-5, 11-2, and 11-5). With a number of four and five game matches, Vassar and Smith should have an exciting rematch later in the season.
Navy hosted its first round robin of the season. The Midshipmen went 6-0 on the weekend with victories over Fordham, Bard, Johns Hopkins, Drexel, Bucknell, and Washington St. Louis. In five of their six matches, Navy shutout their opponents. In the Drexel match, Navy’s #1 and Barb Tournament winner (see history of the Barb Tournament), Andrew McGuinness, lost to Drexel’s Justin Singh in close games (11-9, 9-11, 9-11, 6-11).
Also at the Navy Round Robin, Washington St. Louis made the most of their trip to the East Coast. They defeated Bard 6-0 and North Carolina 9-0, but lost to Johns Hopkins 3-6.
