2010 Howe Cup Day 2 Report

New Haven, CT — The 2010 Women’s National Team Championship continued on Saturday. The day was packed with exciting matches and a few upsets.

In the Howe Cup (“A” Division) Harvard, the undefeated top seed, beat their Ivy League foe, Yale, 7-2.  Trinity College, the second seed, faced Penn.  The Quakers were up for the challenge and captured the match 5-4.  In the consolation draw, Princeton defeated Williams. Stanford and Cornell were tied at four going into the final match, with the Californians winning the final match to earn the victory.

The finals of the Howe Cup (“A” Division) between Penn and Harvard will be webcast on CollegeSquashAssociation.com at 2 PM on Sunday.

In Kurtz Cup action (“B” Division), the highest ranked teams, Brown and Dartmouth, advanced to the finals on Sunday.  Dartmouth shutout Mount Holyoke, while Brown defeated Bates 8-1.  Middlebury and Amherst each won their consolation matches 6-3. The two teams will meet on Sunday to decide which team finishes the tournament 13th.

Twentieth-ranked George Washington made the most of their trip to New England.  They defeated the 17th-ranked Wesleyan, the top team in the Walker Cup (“C” Division), 7-2. F&M had their second 5-4 match of the weekend; however, this time the Diplomats were on the losing end.  Vassar won the nail-biter, advancing to face George Washington in the Walker Cup finals.

In the Epps Cup, the top two seeds — Tufts and Columbia — will meet in the finals. Tufts defeated Northeastern 7-2, and Columbia defeated Connecticut College 8-1. In the consolation semi-finals, Virginia defeated Haverford 7-2, and Smith beat BC.

In the “E” Division, Wellesley beat Rochester 7-2, and Notre Dame beat Drexel by the same score. Wellesley and Notre Dame will face off tomorrow, as will Rochester and Drexel.

Emerging Teams play concluded today, with Vanderbilt finishing as champions.
