St. Lawrence: 2009 – 2010 Women’s College Squash Season Preview

saintlawrenceCanton, NY — The 2008-2009 season was a challenging one for the St. Lawrence Saints, who went 3-14 and finished 8th in the Walker Cup. But with a strong group of seniors to lead the team, the Saints hope to improve upon that record.

The five returning seniors from last year’s National Team Championships roster — Jacqueline Barrett, Sofi Garnett, Alyssa Smith, Jessie Ziegler, and captain Meg North — will be joined by junior Mimi O’Connor and sophomores Jenn Hearn and Kendall Harty. The two players who graduated last year, Blake Carbone and Molly Terrien, played in the middle of the ladder. The Saints expect to have five or six first-year players who will compete for spots in the ladder and will hopefully fill in the gaps left by Carbone and Terrien.

The St. Lawrence squash program as a whole will benefit from the expertise of former US champion Marty Clark, who will be an assistant coach this year. Clark works in the Canton area as an orthopedic surgeon. The team will also be able to use their new glass court, which was installed last year.

“Every match is big for us,” says head coach Chris Abplanalp.  “We always have good matches at the Liberty League Championships against William Smith and Vassar.  Those will be the two big matches we will focus on early this fall as we start our training.”
